In 1849, a group of miners from Oregon were traveling through the Sierra Nevada mountains in search of gold. On the banks of the Yuba River, they found an area that seemed promising and decided to set up camp. They dubbed their new settlement Rough and Ready, in honor of their president, Zachary Taylor. However, Taylor was not popular with everyone in the town, and when he ran for reelection in 1850, they voted to secede from the Union and become their own independent republic. This lasted for three years until they rejoined the United States during the Civil War. Today, Rough and Ready is a small town with a population of just over 1,000. It is located in Nevada County, California and is home to a number of historic buildings from its Gold Rush heyday.
Incorporated in 1856, it was one of the first milling and mining camps in California. The name “Rough and Ready” was given by miners who were working in the area.
